Why is My Car Vibrating

Have you ever sat in a good massage chair? The soothing vibration feeling is so relaxing. Who doesn’t enjoy a good massage? However, when it comes to driving, that vibrating feeling is not so good. In fact, if your car is vibrating it’s a sign of some kind of trouble. Cars can vibrate for several reasons, and it’s a fairly common issue. The good news is most of them are generally easy to fix and don’t indicate any major problems.

Most Common Causes of Vibration

There are multiple causes of vibration. Let’s take a look at the most common ones.

Bad Tires – worn tires are the most common reason your car vibrates. When your tires are worn out, have uneven tread wear, or they are not properly balanced, your vehicle will likely vibrate. Improperly inflated tires can also cause vibrations. The bottom line is if your tires have any kind of issues, you are most likely going to notice a vibrating feeling when you drive. So that’s the first place to check for issues.

Bad Axles or Driveshaft – another common cause of vibration is axles that are uneven or bent. Your axles are generally very durable, but they can become bent for a variety of reasons. If they do get bent, your vehicle is going to ride rough, and you will likely feel the vibration. The faster you drive, the more you’ll feel it. A damaged driveshaft could also be the problem. If this part gets bent or damaged, it can cause your vehicle to vibrate and shake.

Engine Problems – engine issues can also cause vehicles to vibrate, but it’s usually some other problem. The most common reasons of a shaky engine compartment are a dirty or clogged fuel filter, bad spark plugs, pistons misfiring due to bad fuel/air mixture, or not enough air in the engine. If you only feel the vibration after driving a certain amount of time and only when you accelerate, the vibration is likely from the engine.

Brake Rotors are Bad – if the vibration occurs during braking, then more than likely you have a problem with your brake rotors. When your rotors get bent, warped, or damaged it causes a vibrating feeling whenever you brake. If you notice this type of vibration, it’s time to for a brake job, sooner rather than later.

Wheels Are Misaligned – last, but not least, if your wheels are misaligned, then you will notice a problem when you drive. First off, your vehicle will likely drift if you take your hands off the wheel. You could also notice a shaking or vibrating feeling when you hold the steering wheel. Fortunately, this is a very easy and inexpensive fix. All you need is an alignment.

However, just because it’s easy that doesn’t mean you should put it off. If you ignore it, it will only get worse, and it could lead to other problems. Not to mention, it’s not very safe to drive with bad alignment.

The wheel can also be the cause of the vibration. If the lug nuts aren’t tight enough or improperly torqued, you could feel vibration. Worn out wheel bearings could also be the culprit. It’s hard to be sure which problem you have unless you bring it in for a professional inspection. At Hoesly Eco Automotive, our ASE certified technicians are trained to find the problem and get it fixed.
