Why Is My Car Making That Noise – Vancouver Auto Repair

Have you ever wondered why your car makes strange noises? Cars make a lot of different sounds, and many of them are completely normal. But what about when your car makes a weird noise that you’ve never heard before? Why is your car making “that” noise? And more importantly, what should you do about it?

The good news is some sounds are okay, while many other sounds are actually warning signs that something could be wrong or about to go wrong. The reality is you should pay close attention to these sounds because they might help you correct a problem before it gets a lot bigger.

Common Auto Noises and What They Mean

There are too many noises to list them all here, but these are some of the most common “weird” or “annoying” noises you might here from your car.

Engine Noises – engines make noise, but when they make the wrong kinds of noises that’s when you need to pay attention. No matter what the noise sounds like, if it stands out as different or weird then don’t wait to get it checked out. The last thing you want is for your engine to go bad.

Tire Noises – your tires can make several different noises, including humming or squealing. Humming is normal, but if it gets too loud that means something is wrong. Usually, it’s caused by uneven treadwear. If you rotate your tires regularly it will help prevent uneven treadwear. Additionally, if you hear your tires squealing then most likely you have a tire that is underinflated. Just add the appropriate amount of air.

Rattling Noises – these can come from several places but usually when you hear rattling something is loose. Most often a piece of plastic or metal somewhere is banging up against something, which causes the rattling sound. If you hear a rattle, it’s best to bring it in and get it checked out.

Squeaking Noises – this sound usually comes from your brakes. When your brake pads wear down the metal wear indicator gets rubbed and that’s what cause the squeaking. That means it’s time for new brake pads. But be sure to get quality pads because cheap ones might also squeak even though they are brand new.

Grinding Noises – just like squeaking noises, if you hear a grinding noise, it’s likely coming from your brakes, and it probably means you’ve completely worn out your brake pad. This is a serious issue that you should get fixed right away. If not, you won’t be able to safely brake, and your rotors will also get damaged.

Steering Noise – if you hear a weird noise when you turn your steering wheel, there is likely something wrong with your steering system. It could be in several different locations so bring it in and we’ll find exactly where it’s coming from.
