Why Does My Car Squeak When I Turn the Wheel?

What is that terrible sound? You’re in your car and you’re all ready to get where you’re headed when you suddenly notice a squeak sounding when you turn your steering wheel. What is that? Why is your vehicle making that sound? If you get a squealing or squeaking sound when you turn your wheel, there could be several causes. Fortunately, most of the time the fix is something fairly simple. But first you have to figure out what’s causing it.

Possible Issues

If you know a little about auto repair then you might be able to figure out the problem on your own. However, in many cases, you might the need help of a certified mechanic to diagnose the cause and get it repaired. But here are some things you can check if you want to give it a shot on your own.

Power Steering Fluid

Start with the power steering fluid. This fluid does affect how your wheel sounds and feels. When the power steering fluid gets low many times you will hear a squealing noise while the wheel is off center. If you’re lucky, all you need to do to fix this problem is add some fluid. Sometimes, just getting it to the right level again will take care of the issue and stop the squeaking. If the sound continues, then it could be dirty fluid or an issue with the power steering pump. A technician would be able to diagnose and fix this problem.

Steering or Suspension

The next place to check is the suspension or a steering component. Both of these are also possible causes of a squeaky wheel. And this is usually an easy fix as well. If any of these components has an issue with lubrication you’re likely to hear squeaking. The noise could be coming from several places, including the ball joints, tire rod ends, universal joints, and seals. All of these parts need proper lubrication.

Steering Wheel Housing

One other place to look is the steering wheel housing. Sometimes this housing can rub against the interior trim and wear it down. When they rub against each other you might hear a squeak or squeal. If this is the case, then you’ll need to take your vehicle in for a repair, as you most likely won’t be able to fix this problem on your own.
