Why Does My Car Sputter When I Give it Gas?

If you’re like most drivers you expect your vehicle to run smoothly. And you rely on it to get you to so many places. Of course, numerous things can go wrong with any kind of car. And one of the most frustrating things that any driver faces is a sputtering vehicle. If you’ve ever experienced that sensation, then you know what we’re talking about.

You go to step on the gas pedal and your car, truck, crossover, or SUV just kind of ignores you. It almost seems like it wants to stop working right there in the middle of the road. So why does your car sputter when you give it gas and what can be done about it?

Common Causes

First and foremost, your sputtering problem could simply be a fuel problem. If your vehicle is low on gas then it’s likely going to sputter. This doesn’t happen to often because most people recognize when they’re getting low on fuel. But it could be the reason your car sputters if you’re not paying attention.

Unfortunately, the other causes of a sputtering vehicle tend to be more serious. For example, it could be caused by an issue in your exhaust or fuel system. If you have old or dirty parts they could be causing your problem.

Fuel System – if you have a bad part in your fuel system, like a pump, filter or injector, then you could experience sputtering. When your vehicle doesn’t get proper air and fuel your engine won’t get the proper combustion in order to power your vehicle. If the problems persist you could even end up with complete engine failure.

Spark Plugs – this is a fairly common cause of engine sputtering, fortunately, it’s a fairly easy fix, too. If your spark plugs are bad, you just need to replace them. If nothing else is wrong, that should fix the problem.

Mass Airflow Sensor – if this sensor gets dirty it can lead to sputtering. This sensor tracks the weight and temperature of the air moving to the engine. When the sensor gets dirty or worn out, it can cause a weak engine and lower gas mileage.

Catalytic Converter – this lowers the amount of pollution put out by your vehicle. If it’s not working properly for any reason, your engine will likely experience some sputtering.
