Why Does My Car Shake When I Idle?

Your car should always run smooth, whether you’re driving or sitting idled a stoplight. But sometimes car shake. Cars can shake for a lot of reasons. If you’re driving and you feel shaking, it could be your tires, or your shocks. If you feel shaking when you apply the brakes, you might need to get your brake system checked. It could also be a sign that your wheels need to be aligned, or your tires balanced. The bottom line is your car can shake for many reasons. But what about when your car comes to a stop, or you’re sitting in park, and it won’t stop shaking? Why does that happen? Why does your car shake when you’re not even moving?

The Most Common Reasons Your Car Shakes When Its Idled

There are several possible reasons your car, truck, crossover, or SUV shakes when you come to a stop. Let’s take a look at some of the most common reasons, and what you should do to resolve the problem.

Check the Spark Plugs – bad spark plugs are the most common cause of engine shaking. When sparks plugs are dirty or worn out they don’t fire properly. When your engine doesn’t fire correctly it tends to vibrate and shake. It’s best just to change your sparks plugs to resolve this problem.

Fuel Intake System – when your fuel intake system is dirty or not properly adjusted, this can cause your engine to vibrate or shutter when you’re idled. To fix this problem, have a mechanic check the intake system, as well as the fuel pump at the same time.

Timing Belt – belts are another possible cause of engine shaking. Your timing belt, serpentine belt, or your v-belts can all cause engine squealing or vibration. If any of these belts is loose or worn out, other parts can be effected. That can cause annoying noises and lead to shaking. You just need to get your belts checked out. They might need to be replaced, or the problem could be fixed with a simple adjustment.

Old or Broken Hoses – your vehicle has a lot of hoses and when one or more of these hoses is worn out or broken it effects your engine. In fact, a shaky engine is a common sign that you have some kind of problem with a hose. Fortunately, you just need to bring your vehicle into Hoesly and we’ll find the problem and get it repaired.

Busted Motor Mounts – these mounts keep your engine attached to your vehicle’s frame. If they become loose or broken then it will cause your engine to shake. If you feel a sever shake when idled it could be your motor mounts. If it is, you need to get these fixed as soon as possible.
