Why Does My Car’s Check Charging System Light Come On?

Your dashboard is full of different warning lights. Some you are probably familiar with, and others might not be as common. Likewise, you might know what some of them mean, but there may be others you have no idea what they are trying to tell you.

One of those warning lights is the “check charging system” light. If you haven’t heard of this one, you’re not alone. But if it has come on, on your dashboard and you’re not sure what it means or what to do about it, then keep reading.

What Is Your Charging System?

Your charging system is made of several components, including your battery, alternator, electronic control unit, and wiring. All of these work together to keep your battery fully charged. This system also provides the necessary energy to operate the many electrical components of your vehicle, including the radio and lights.

Reasons Your Charging System Light Turns On

So why does this light come on? There are several possibilities so let’s look at some of the most common reasons. For starters, when this warning light does come on, your vehicle is now running on battery power and nothing else. That means if the system fails your battery won’t stay charged, meaning you’ll eventually have a dead battery. So, if you see this light, then you should bring your vehicle into see us as soon as you can. You don’t want to get stranded somewhere with a dead battery.

Issues with the Battery – the first thing to check is the battery itself. If it’s bad, then it’s time for a new one. Just bring it by our shop and we’ll test it for you.

Alternator Problems – if your alternator is going out, it will cause this light to turn on. To know if it is your alternator bring it into our Vancouver auto repair shop to get it tested. Our diagnostic tools will be able to tell us right away if your alternator is on the fritz.

Troubles with the Drive Belt – when your drive belt breaks down it will prevent your alternator from working right and the warning light will come on. If the belt is bad, you will need to get it replaced.

Bad Connections or Corroded Wires – your electrical system also has many wires and connections. If the wires get corroded or the connections come loose, the warning light could come on. At Hoesly, we will check all the connections and make sure everything is in good condition and hooked up right.

Computer System Issues – if none of these is the cause of your problem, it could be an issue with the computer system. Like all the rest of these issues, we can test it in our auto repair shop in Vancouver to figure it out.
