When Should I Change My Fuel Filter

When Should I Change My Fuel Filter?

Your engine needs gas to run, unless you have an electric vehicle, of course. But in order for your vehicle to send clean gas to your engine it must first pass through the fuel filter. This part is extremely important. If your engine is getting dirty fuel its going to hurt its performance. The fuel filter also protects your fuel injectors. But as with any other part, your fuel filter wears out over time.

Eventually, fuel filters get clogged with so much debris they dont allow the fuel to pass through to the engine. Of course, that means your car isnt really going to work right. In fact, without gasoline, its not even going to start. So thats why its so important for your entire fuel system to be working properly, including your fuel filter. So how often should you change your fuel filter?

When to Replace Your Fuel Filter

With older model cars the general rule is to replace your fuel filter every 30,000 miles or two years. With newer vehicles, you can typically go longer in between replacements. If youre not sure whether or not you need to replace your filter, bring your vehicle into Hoesly Automotive and well run a fuel pressure test. This will tell us how much PSI your pump is generating at the fuel rail. It should be in the range of 30-60 PSI for most vehicles. If the fuel filter is bad, youll have reduced pressure.

If your car, truck, crossover, or SUV has a bad fuel filter youll start to notice the difference in your vehicles performance. If you continue to ignore it, eventually youll find yourself on the side of road calling for help. So if your filter is bad get it replaced.

Sigs to Watch for

If you dont want to bring your vehicle in for a fuel pressure test right away, there are some signs of trouble you can look for.

  • Your vehicle wont stay cranked
  • Your engine keeps sputtering or dying while driving or accelerating
  • Your engine idles roughly
  • Your vehicle wont start up
  • You notice a loss of power in your car
  • Your vehicle is getting bad gas mileage
  • The check engine light comes on

If you notice any of these signs, then you should get your vehicle checked out. If you do have a bad fuel filter then dont wait around to get it replaced.
