When Should I Change My Fuel Filter?

When Should I Change My Fuel Filter?

Your engine needs gas to run, unless you have an electric vehicle, of course. But in order for your vehicle to send clean gas to your engine it must first pass through the fuel filter. This part is extremely important. If your engine is getting dirty fuel it’s going to hurt its performance. The fuel filter also protects your fuel injectors. But as with any other part, your fuel filter wears out over time.

Eventually, fuel filters get clogged with so much debris they don’t allow the fuel to pass through to the engine. Of course, that means your car isn’t really going to work right. In fact, without gasoline, it’s not even going to start. So that’s why it’s so important for your entire fuel system to be working properly, including your fuel filter. So how often should you change your fuel filter?

When to Replace Your Fuel Filter

With older model cars the general rule is to replace your fuel filter every 30,000 miles or two years. With newer vehicles, you can typically go longer in between replacements. If you’re not sure whether or not you need to replace your filter, bring your vehicle into Hoesly Automotive and we’ll run a fuel pressure test. This will tell us how much PSI your pump is generating at the fuel rail. It should be in the range of 30-60 PSI for most vehicles. If the fuel filter is bad, you’ll have reduced pressure.

If your car, truck, crossover, or SUV has a bad fuel filter you’ll start to notice the difference in your vehicle’s performance. If you continue to ignore it, eventually you’ll find yourself on the side of road calling for help. So if your filter is bad get it replaced.

Sigнs to Watch for

If you don’t want to bring your vehicle in for a fuel pressure test right away, there are some signs of trouble you can look for.

  • Your vehicle won’t stay cranked
  • Your engine keeps sputtering or dying while driving or accelerating
  • Your engine idles roughly
  • Your vehicle won’t start up
  • You notice a loss of power in your car
  • Your vehicle is getting bad gas mileage
  • The check engine light comes on

If you notice any of these signs, then you should get your vehicle checked out. If you do have a bad fuel filter then don’t wait around to get it replaced. At Hoesly Automotive, we’ll make sure you get the right fuel filter for your vehicle. And we’ll make sure your car is running smoothly again. Don’t wait to take care of this problem. A bad fuel filter could be a really bad for your engine. So make sure you get it taken care of it as soon as you can.
