What Should You Do if Your Vehicle Overheats – Vancouver Auto Repair

Have you ever seen someone on the side of the road with their hood up and steam pouring out
of the engine? Or, maybe you’re the one that was on the side of the road. That’s a terrible
situation to be in. When your engine overheats, that usually indicates there is an issue with
your cooling system. But there are other things that can cause an engine to overheat.

Why Is Your Vehicle Overheating?

When your cooling system has an issue, the engine can’t stay cool, because not enough coolant
is reaching the engine block. Typically, there is a blockage or a leak somewhere in the system. It
takes a trained professional with the right tools to find it. Other cooling system issues that can
cause your vehicle to overheat include a broken water pump, a bad thermostat or radiator fan,
or a broken or blocked coolant hose.

Other than the obvious bellowing steam coming from under the hood, there are some other
signs to look for that could indicate an overheating engine. If you notice the temperature gauge
on your dashboard rising above the normal levels, then your engine is starting to overheat.
Another thing to look for, or actually “smell” for, is a weird odor coming from the front of your
car. That could be a sign of leaking cooling fluid, which has a sweet smell.
What to Do About an Overheating Engine

So, what should you do if you think your engine is overheating? The first thing to try is to turn
the heater on. That might sound strange but turning the heater on could pull heat away from
the engine, which could help cool it down.

If that doesn’t work, then you should pull over, so your engine doesn’t reach dangerous
temperature levels. If you have some coolant/antifreeze in your vehicle, or even some water,
you could add it to your radiator if the level is low. But wait for the engine to cool down before
you try this.

If this cools your engine down, then you can try driving to a service station to have your system
checked. But if that doesn’t work, then you might need to call for a tow truck to get your
vehicle to our auto repair shop.
