Not everyone needs to drive a car every day. You might live in an area where it is easier to take public transportation where you need to go. Alternatively, you might live in an area where it is faster and more convenient to walk most places instead of trying to find a place to park. At the same time, you enjoy the convenience of having a car available when you do need one. That makes you an infrequent driver. You will want to consider how to properly maintain your vehicle when you do not drive it very much. Continue reading to get some advice on how to do exactly that.
Why is Car Maintenance So Important?
No matter how often you end up driving your car, it is likely one of your biggest investments. You will want to make sure that you take care of it so that it lasts for quite a long time. There are certain things that you need to do regularly in order to keep it running in prime condition. These include:
- Regular oil changes
- Routine tire rotations
- Regularly changing the oil filter
These are just a few of the maintenance items that you will want to make sure are taken care of, even if you do not drive the car very often.
Put Oil Changes on Your Calendar
If you do not drive very much, you will want to scrap the notion that you need to change the oil every 3,500 miles. Instead, go with the six-month rule. Every six months, you should have the oil changed just to keep it fresh and free of pollutants.
Drive it Around the Block Once in a While
The engine needs to get warm sometimes. Give the car a start and then drive it around the block a few times. Do this for at least 15 or 30 minutes every two weeks or so. Your vehicle will be much better off as a result.
