Simple Summer Car Care Tips

How’s your summer going? Having a great time in the warm weather? Have you taken any vacations or road trips yet? July is coming to a close but we still have several more weeks of summer.

Summer can be a blast, but make sure you don’t forget about your vehicle while you’re having all that fun. You need to give your car the proper attention during these hot summer months or it won’t keep getting you where you need to be. That’s because even though you might take a summer vacation, your car, truck, crossover, or SUV doesn’t get to.

Simple Summer Maintenance

The good news is it doesn’t really take much effort to keep your vehicle happy and keep it on the road during the summer. All you really have to do is a take care of it. Here’s how.

Engine Belts – have you looked at the condition of your serpentine belt lately? Did you even know you had a serpentine belt? It runs between the alternator, the fan and several other components. When it wears out, it can become loose, start to squeal, and even break. If it’s in bad condition you won’t have the right amount of tension. So if you notice any small pieces missing or any cracks, then it's time to replace the belt.

Air-Conditioning System – no one likes to drive in the summer without air-conditioning. You might be able to out this off during the winter but not anymore. If your AC is older, then leaking Freon into the atmosphere is not good. You could buy one of the many leak-sealing products and refrigerant rechargers, if your system is low on refrigerant. But if this doesn’t fix the leak, then bring your vehicle into Hoesly Eco Automotive before you pay to repair the entire air-conditioning system.

Coolant System – speaking of staying cool, summer driving is prime time you’re your engine to overheat. That’s why it’s so important that your cooling system is working properly. Check the level of coolant fluid in your car. And also inspect your hoses and the coolant reservoir. Check for any leaks throughout the entire system. Lastly, squeeze the hoses to make sure they’re firm and not soft or squishy.

Other Essential Fluids – in addition to the antifreeze, you should check all of your other important fluids. Check oil, brake, power steering and windshield-washer fluids often. They are constantly being used so you need to make sure they are replenished.

Brakes – and speaking of brake fluid, now is a good time to check on your brakes in general. Have you noticed a lack of bite? Do they feel kind of spongy? If they do, then it might be time for some new pads. You might need to bleed the brake system, as well. It’s best to have your mechanic do this for you.

Wipers – this might not seem like the best time to worry about your wipers. But it’s going to rain again at some point. If your wipers are worn it causes unsightly streaks on your windshield. It doesn’t cost much to replace your wipers but being able to see clearly while driving is priceless.

Air Filter – Now is a good time to check your air filter. And if it’s dirty, then it’s a good time to buy a new one. In addition, if you have a newer model car, then it likely has a pollen filter or cabin filtration systems. If your vehicle does have these, then check these filters, too. Sometimes these cabin filters are easy to change yourself.
