Signs Your Clutch Is About to Go Out


Grinding – Anyone who’s ever driven a manual, knows what that awful grinding noise sounds like. It’s just part of learning how to drive a stick shift. However, it’s not a normal sound and if your gears are grinding as you shift them, then it’s time to get your clutch checked out. It could also be a problem with the gear synchronizers, but whatever the case, don’t wait to come see us.


Bad Smells – When you use your clutch you shouldn’t smell anything. So, if there is any kind of a burning smell it means your clutch is likely starting to slip. When it starts to slip, that means it’s run its course, and it’s time for a new one. Another sign your clutch is slipping is a rattling noise that happens when you aren’t using the clutch.


Difficult Gear Changes – Another common sign your clutch is done is when your car has difficulty shifting through the gears. If you can’y shift smoothly, especially into reverse, it’s likely that the clutch is done.


RPNs Running Higher – If you notice your vehicle running at higher-than-normal RPMs, that’s another sign your clutch is about to go out. This is also a sign that your clutch is slipping, which happens when the clutch gets old and worn out. So, pay attention to your tachometer to make sure your RPMs are where they should be in each gear.


Power Loss or Hesitation – When a clutch is going bad, it can’t send enough power to your vehicle’s wheels. When that happens, it may feel like your car hesitates or lacks power when you try to accelerate. If you happen to be pulling something or your vehicle is weighed down, the problem is even more noticeable.


Higher Catch Point - Once you know your clutch and you know where the catch point is, you should be able to tell if the catch point changes. If you notice that the catch point is hitting higher, then your clutch is wearing out. If it is, then it will continue to move higher the longer you put off the repair. So, if the catch point has moved up, then that means it’s time for a replacement clutch.


Spongy Feeling - Your clutch pedal should never have a spongy feeling. If you notice this feeling when you press on your clutch that’s usually the first sign of trouble. The pedal might also feel looser and sink to the floor much faster. There might be an issue with the clutch release mechanism or hydraulic system.
