How Often Should You Service a Diesel Engine?

If you own a diesel then you know you’ve made a serious investment in your vehicle. So that means taking care of it shouldn’t be a problem. But sometimes diesel owners don’t understand all the ins and outs of caring for their vehicle. And that can be really costly. Proper maintenance is absolutely critical if you want to keep your diesel engine running smoothly for many years to come.

Stick to You Owner’s Manual

The easiest way to take care of your diesel engine is to simply follow your manufacturer’s guidelines for vehicle maintenance. When you do this, you have the best chance of keeping your diesel engine running at optimal performance. But there are several other factors that play a role in the health of your diesel. Things like road conditions, your driving habits, weather and your driving distance all affect your engine and the maintenance you’ll need. But again, if you stick to the recommended guidelines, you should be okay.

Recommended Maintenance Guidelines

Your diesel will obviously need different maintenance at different times. But these are the standard guidelines that are most likely going to keep your engine running its best.

Every 3,000-Miles or 90 Days – You should get your oil and filter changed. You should also lubricate the chassis, check all your fluids and replace or add if necessary. Check your tire pressure, as well as all your belts and hoses.

Every 10,000-Miles or Yearly – You should do a diagnostic check and change your diesel fuel filter every 10,000 miles or every 3rd oil change. You should also change your oil and filter. Lubricate the chassis, check you air filter, brakes and wheel bearings, and check all belts and hoses. Also check your cooling system hoses, and make sure your fluids are clean and have the proper pH levels. Check you vehicle for leaks or any other problems, and rotate your tires.

Every 20,000-Miles or 2 Years – Start by repeating the steps from your 10,000-mile check. And then add a brake fluid flush, as well as cooling system flush. This will help remove contamination that builds up from normal wear and tear. Replace your automatic transmission fluid and change the filters. Service the differentia, and if you own a Dodge, then also adjust the transmission bands.

Every 30,000-Miles or 3 Years – Again, you start with the same maintenance as your 10,000-mile inspection. You should also adjust the valves and flush the power steering fluid.

Every 50,000-Miles or 5 Years – This will be the same as 10,000 mile and multi-point inspection. Plus, you should replace the oil f you have a manual transmission. You should also replace the oil in differentials and the transfer case.

Every 60,000-Miles or 6 Years – This is the same as 10,000 mile or annual tune-up and inspection.

Every 100,000-Miles – if you’re fortunate enough to reach 100,000 miles then it’s time adjust the valves and go through all the other inspection and tune-ups checks.

And don’t forget that every 6 months, or 6,000 miles you should check the alignment, your steering, and suspension.
