Serious Brake Problems You Shouldn’t Ignore
There are numerous things that can go wrong with your brakes. Here are five things you should never ignore.
Brake pedal feels spongy – your brake pedal should always feel firm, instead of squishy. If your pedal doesn’t really give you any resistance, or it pushes all the way to the floor, your brakes are in big trouble. First, make sure you can actually stop your vehicle. Once it’s stopped, you should get your vehicle into our Vancouver auto repair shop as soon as you can, the safest way possible.
Leaking brake fluid – if you notice your brake fluid is leaking this could be a big problem, as well. When your vehicle is low on fluid, you can’t stop safely because there’s not enough pressure on the calipers. This is another issue that you can’t ignore.
Your brakes smell hot – your brakes shouldn’t give off any kind of smell when you use them. If you can smell something hot, like burning rubber or a chemical smell, your brakes are likely overheating. When your brakes overheat, they can completely fail, meaning you can’t stop. Car pulls to one side – normally when you press your brakes your vehicle should not pull to one side or the other. If you feel it pulling to one side when you brake one of the rotors might be warped, or a caliper could be stuck. Don’t get this confused with pulling while driving. This indicates a problem with wheel alignment. But when your car pulls during braking, this is a sign your brakes need repair that shouldn’t be ignored.
Dashboard brake light turns on – it’s never a good sign when a light on your dashboard comes on, including your ABS or brake light. But if it does come on, then your vehicle’s computer is indicating there is an issue with your brake system. It could be a number of things, but unless you run a diagnostic test, you won’t know how serious it is. So, if the light comes on, on your dash, then come see us so we can find out what’s causing it.
